WordPress vs Webflow: which one fits your business

Both platforms build good websites. The honest answer to which one you should use has less to do with the technology and more to do with who will be updating the site in a year.

What each one is actually good at

WordPress runs a large share of the web because it is flexible and familiar. You can add pages, posts, products and photos yourself, and almost any feature you can name exists as a plugin. In South Africa it is also easy to find someone else to work on it if we ever part ways.

Webflow produces very clean, fast sites with tight control over design, and hosting is built in. It suits brochure sites where the look matters more than the ability to add things later.

The costs people miss

  • WordPress needs maintaining. Core, theme and plugin updates, backups, security scanning. Skip it and you eventually pay for a cleanup instead, as I explain in what happens when you skip WordPress updates.
  • Webflow charges monthly in dollars, which moves with the rand, and the site lives on their platform. Moving it elsewhere later is not simple.

The third option most agencies skip

For a small brochure site that changes rarely, a hand-built static site beats both. There is no software to update, nothing to hack, and it loads almost instantly on mobile data. The trade-off is that you cannot log in and add a page yourself: changes come through me, usually the same day.

That is what this site runs on, and several client sites too.

A simple way to choose

  • You will add your own content regularly — WordPress.
  • You want a shop, bookings or member logins — WordPress.
  • You want the fastest, lowest-maintenance brochure site and are happy for changes to come through me — a static build.
  • You are design-led, updating often, and comfortable with a monthly dollar fee — Webflow is reasonable, though I build few of them.

What matters more than the platform

Search engines do not rank platforms. They rank pages: how fast they load, how well the content answers the search, and how the site is structured. A well-built WordPress site will outrank a badly built Webflow one and the other way around.

So pick on maintenance and ownership, not on fashion. If you are not sure, tell me who will be updating the site and how often, and I will tell you which one fits — see how a website gets built here.
